Are Your Anonymous Reporting Channels Hiding a Bigger Problem?

When a friend is the target of a report, resist the urge to disrupt established processes

An anonymous allegation against a trusted work friend creates a dual dilemma. Ask an Ethicist columnist Vera Cherepanova’s short-term advice: get comfortable with uncomfortability.

I recently became aware of an anonymous hotline report concerning my friend and colleague. The allegation is serious enough that I can’t dismiss it outright, but the details seem incomplete, and some parts do not fully add up. My friend has always treated me well, but I guess it doesn’t guarantee they are a good person. On the other hand, I am not 100% sold on trusting an anonymous allegation, although I concur that sometimes anonymity is necessary. How should I navigate this situation, and what are my ethical obligations here? — Name Withheld

What makes your dilemma particularly difficult is that anonymous reporting is both necessary and profoundly imperfect at the same time.

On the one hand, there’s a reason anonymous hotlines exist. People are often scared to put their name on a report, which is not irrational. They worry about retaliation, losing opportunities or simply making their work life miserable. I’ve even seen people sign complaints with fake names like “James Bond” (a real case) in systems that technically didn’t allow anonymity, because they didn’t trust the company to protect them. So, the move toward anonymity didn’t appear out of nowhere. It’s a workaround for a much more profound problem: People don’t feel safe telling the truth openly.

But once anonymity becomes the main route, another problem appears: The barrier is lowered not only for bona fide concerns but also for gossip, partial information, suspicion, score-settling and, occasionally, plain-old malice. That does not mean anonymous reports are generally unreliable. However, they come without the normal context that helps us judge credibility.

So, what do you do when the person named is your friend?

First, take the allegation seriously, but don’t treat it like a final verdict. You shouldn’t brush off the allegation just because you like your friend or because they’ve always been good to you. But you also shouldn’t jump straight to “well, that settles it.” The difficulty here is that you don’t actually know enough to do either.

Second, don’t try to become your own detective. If there is a formal process, let it run. This is not the moment to become an investigator, nor to warn your friend, nor to start collecting informal “intel” around the office. If the reason anonymity exists is fear of retaliation, trying to “work it out” informally can make things worse.

Third, be honest with yourself about the limits of what you know. The fact that your friend has treated you well matters, but it doesn’t prove anything. The fact that the report is anonymous and incomplete also matters, but it doesn’t prove anything either. You may have to sit with uncertainty for a while.

The bigger problem here is that too many organizations have failed to create conditions where people can safely speak in their own name. Anonymous channels can be necessary, but they shouldn’t be romanticized or treated as self-authenticating. Nor should they be dismissed as gossip. There is a difference between listening seriously and accepting a definitive verdict. 

Therefore, the right response is neither denial nor blind acceptance, but serious, proportionate attention.

The previous question came from a senior leader whose team depended on a critical AI system provided by a foreign vendor with opaque algorithms and limited auditability. The dilemma revolved around whether strong operational performance was enough to justify continued use or whether the lack of transparency and meaningful oversight made it unethical to rely on a system the organization could not fully understand or govern.

In our response, guest ethicist Brian Haman and I noted: “The tension between transparency and dependency exposes the conflict between two obligations, namely the philosophical ideal of traceable, auditable algorithms and the pragmatic need for uninterrupted operations. Transparency underpins accountability. Without it, organizations cannot meaningfully assess bias or compliance risk. In practice, however, operational pressures often dominate, particularly when AI systems are embedded in essential workflows where downtime carries significant cost.

This calculus becomes even more complex when foreign vendors are involved. Many AI products developed outside domestic jurisdictions, particularly in China, limit auditability or algorithmic disclosure due to trade secrecy or national security restrictions. Recent examples, such as DeepSeek’s inference engines or voice-cloning platforms like Qwen3-TTS, illustrate the uncertainties that come with geopolitical entanglement. Meanwhile, transatlantic dynamics, e.g., the US-EU tension over data protection and digital sovereignty, further blur the ethical boundaries between efficiency and control.” Read the full column here.
