In the decade that Corporate Compliance Insights has covered the corporate compliance and risk management profession, we’ve heard a common refrain: Compliance is a stressful, demanding career that routinely has compliance professionals at odds with their colleagues. But we wanted to understand more about what exactly makes compliance roles so stressful and to what extent jobs in compliance and risk management may place individuals’ mental health in jeopardy.
So, in late summer 2021, we conducted a survey of 240 compliance officers from around the world regarding the pressures of their jobs. Here is a look at a few key findings:
- Fifty-nine percent of compliance officers report feeling burned out.
- Forty-three percent of people in our survey said they had difficulties with anxiety or had been diagnosed with anxiety in the past year.
- Sixty-nine percent say the pace of changing regulations is the most stressful aspect of their jobs.
