Functional title: Director, Enterprise Risk and Insurance Management
This position reports to the chief compliance, ethics, and risk officer and is responsible for all aspects of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), including working with university stakeholders to assess, identify and assist in the remediation of the potential risks that may hinder the reputation, safety, security, and financial prosperity of the university. The director is responsible for leading a preemptive, collaborative, and sustainable approach to risk assessment, management and mitigation for the institution. Working in partnership with departments across campus, the position is responsible for approaching risk and loss control matters with a problem-solving perspective that contributes to the university accomplishing its mission-related educational goals.
Develop and maintain ERM tools, practices, policies and overall frameworks, including performing the activities associated with the design, development, application, execution, and reporting of the ERM process for the university.
Perform enterprise risk assessments and analyze risk scoring, scenario analyses, risk indicators and metrics, and dashboards to provide input on risk scoring and ERM methodology.
Research, integrate, and recommend changes to reports, policies, charters, and other documentation supporting the ERM framework.
Review results of regulatory or internal audits and inspections, making needed process adjustments and applying lessons learned to mitigate enterprise risk.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify, evaluate, mitigate and monitor the university’s risks, building relationships across the university for the purposes of conducting interviews, performing risk assessments, scenario analyses, and identifying and tracking risk responses, risk indicators, metrics, and dashboards. Clearly define roles, responsibilities, and accountability of all stakeholders.
Develop, implement and monitor university-wide policies and procedures for the operation of risk management programs including administration of the university’s commercially-insured, collaboratively-insured and self-insured programs. Periodically review programs to determine appropriate retentions and deductibles.
Identifies and investigates exposures related to loss and damage to property, income, reputation, and/or personnel.
Manages the university’s property and liability insurance programs, including the coordination of claims and loss recovery management.
Responsible for compliance with regulatory requirements. Ensures that controls are in place to manage risk and assess the strengths of the controls.
Manage the oversight of claim administration programs used for processing both self-insured and commercial insurance claims including employment practices, malpractice, auto, general liability and property claims.
Develop and coordinate training seminars for the campus community on the university’s enterprise risk management program and insurance coverages.
Evaluate and supervise risk management staff.
Master’s or doctorate in an appropriate area of specialization and 3 years of appropriate experience or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and 5 years of appropriate experience.
Additional Minimum Requirements Preferences
Prefer a masters degree in appropriate areas of specialization and four years of appropriate experience, or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience, AND five years of leadership experience with demonstrated ability to plan, implement and lead multiple institution-wide functions within a complex decentralized, and diverse organization; several years of progressively responsible experience involving risk management and claims management that would enable the individual to successfully perform the functions of the position as described in the position description; and excellent communication skills with experience preparing and presenting information clearly and concisely, in writing and orally, to a wide-range of internal, external and customer constituencies.
Master’s degree in a related field; knowledge of CSURMA insurance programs and coverages; experience in a large, complex and diverse public higher education or governmental institution; demonstrated experience with the full implementation of large-scale enterprise risk management program. Knowledge of risk management techniques and technologies; demonstrated proficiency in physical and human resource planning, with expertise in risk management programs; knowledge of principles, concepts, and terminology in risk management; and knowledge of claims handling is preferred.
Certified Risk and Compliance Management Professional (CRCMP)
Have a thorough understanding of risks and risk-mitigation concepts and practices; knowledge of claims handling; ability to make timely decisions; ability to address problems or assignments from a broad interactive perspective using intensive knowledge, research skills and analytical thinking in order to develop a solution that integrates legal compliance with the University’s established goals, policies and procedures; and excellent written and verbal communication skills, providing the ability to effectively communicate with executives, administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
