As an outgrowth of the Watergate investigation, the SEC files a civil injunctive suit against Gulf Oil Corp. regarding improper campaign contributions to President Richard M. Nixon — one of many such suits brought by the SEC at the time. Although the SEC also uncovers overseas payments, those are not mentioned in the SEC’s suit. (SEC v. Gulf Oil Corp., Civ.
